Everyone likes a slice of cake and a cup of tea right? Well, here at Kuretake UK we love both and so we thought why not challenge our creative sides and bake! The idea was first introduced by Gráinne and Danielle and it is fair to say that almost everyone in the office got involved (we clearly have a sweet tooth or two amongst us).

It was decided we shall have 5 heats, one each week with the winners going into the semi finals.

The heats are as follows:

Heat 1:                  Danielle V Kaan                            17th June
Heat 2:                  Sharon V Emma                             24th June
Heat 3:                  Rebecca V Louise                            1st July
Heat 4:                  Gráinne V Helen                              8th July
Heat 5:                  Rachel V Liz V Charlotte                 15th July

Semi-Final will commence 22nd July
Final will be 5th August

So without further delay, lets bake...

First off we had Danielle V Kaan. There was competitive rivalry from the start as both love to bake but it added to the fun of it.

Cake A was made by Kaan (he likes to think of himself as the next Nigella, I mean Jamie)

Kaan baked Baklava consisting of the following ingredients:

Sugar, Honey, Filo Pastry, Pistachio nuts, Butter (a lot. Melted) and apparently a secret family recipe spice mix (top secret) a super secret combination of special, secret spices. Kaan says it’s a secret and is definitely not Allspice! I must admit these little squares of nuttiness looked amazing.

Next up was Cake B, made by Danielle and titled 'Cherry Chocolate Cheesecake Cupcakes'.

I would just like to point out at this stage that I wasn't here the Monday of this first heat so annoyingly couldn't sample either of them. I've said they need to make a second batch but aren't having it!!

To create these yummy cupcakes Danielle first of all made a chocolate sponge with cherry jam. The cheesecake mixture is then baked in with the sponge. When cool a good helping of cream cheese frosting is added to the top and finished off with a cherry dipped into dark chocolate.

Everyone in the office gladly helped themselves to a tasting or two with their cup of tea and then the voting began.

So who was the winner? Did nuttiness win over sweetness? It was VERY close and winning by one vote it was... Drum roll please... Danielle.

The next heat will be this coming Monday 24th June with a full write up to follow.

Who now wants to bake?
